PSDs: largest of the file formats, lossless quality, but easiest format to edit later. Contains multiple layer information.
BMPs: uncompressed picture file. pro: lossless quality, con: large save files
PCXs: similar to BMPs.
TIFFs/TIFs: Tagged Image File Format; smaller than BMPs (can be used with a number of compression algorithms), but with excellent image reproduction. This will cover your middle ground nicely when you can't decide if you want better image quality or smaller file sizes.
PNGs: (portable network graphics) similar in quality to TIFF files; I'm under the impression that it is a licensed format through Apple (most oldskool macs used pngs) which is becoming more common as almost all browsers are .png capable these days.
JPGs/JPEGs: compressed using LZH algorithms making for small file sizes, lossy reproduction, but ideal for photographic quality images
GIFs: compressed files using Compuserve's compression technology, ideal for graphic-quality cell-shaded images, pros: the gif82 format is capable of multi-frame animation as well as a transparency setting which can be applied to the first colour of the pallete. Cons: not as good as jpgs for photographic quality images pros: better in compression and reproduction of graphic images, making it useful for webpage design
Also, that picture you drew looks awesome... I can already see improvement from the Grand Arms pic. My only crit though is that the background doesn't match how nicely you rendered the character.

Actually, I'm fairly certain PNGs are not licensed. And I just checked the wikipedia article. Blah blah, response to the termination of free licenses for JPEGs, shortcomings of GIFs (256 colour limitation), but yes, not-proprietary.
Actually, as far as I recall from my image processing days, the rule of thumb was JPEGs for photos, GIFs for logos. (And, apparently, PNGs for both.)

No, Al, PSDs are huge too. They contain all the layer information and stuff. Depending on the complexity of the image, a PSD can often be much larger than a bitmap.
