Perhaps I imply too much...
Admittedly, I wasn't entirely sure it was a joke until I got to the part I quoted. I think it's interesting though, how many parts of the review seem serious because they play on facts we take for granted about computers, simply because they exist in windows. (Like requiring anti-virus software, for example.)
I've wanted to flesh out my 'Windows-as-a-house' metaphor for some time (and I may actually get around to it one of these days), but it's useful to show that there's a lot that we take for granted on a computer that we wouldn't stand for in other circumstances. The example I used the other day was, if your house was like a Windows-based computer, every time you plugged in a new appliance, you'd have to kill the main circuit breaker. Not only is this a ridiculous proposition, it's a state of affairs that needs not exist, but does in Windows. (Even more ridiculous, I guess, is that after having had the breaker on for more than a day, your appliances would run more slowly and you'd have to reset the breaker to get them back at full speed.)
Oh, and the bullet link was a scraping from metafilter, much like the minimac review. I don't actively search out information on torpedoes, it finds me. (Yeah, that's the ticket.)

so, if it's a joke review, couldn't you say something about it being a joke, Paras?
I mean, the only thing that really got me ready to jump down their throats was the whole virus thing... because we don't get viruses... but the rest of it, I can see some people coming to those conclusions if they were die hard windows users to begin with... i mean, some windows-based stuff doesn't work in macs. and some websites don't work in safari, but it's not because Macs are dumb, it's because designers don't think of safari (or mac programs in general) when they're designing.
this is the only thing that really pissed me off: Think of it more as a first computer for your daughter or niece than as a machine to get any serious work done and you’ll get the point of the Mini and its target market. It might also be the perfect computer for grandmothers or autistic children, for example. Are they suggesting technological ineptness is only found in particular types of people? but yeah, if it's a joke... that part's just not very nice... I guess
And Eric, when is south by southwest?? and where, I've totally forgotten. isn't north by northeast somewhere like toronto? hmm... if only... that's an awesome lineup
And... Paras... why are you seeking out information on the subject of torpedoes?

They're not torpedoes, but..
Alls I need is a Brita filter, and it's the high life for me.
And, after reading pages of geek praise for the Mac Mini, finally, and honest review:
"Secondly and possibly even more glaringly, there is no antivirus program shipped with the Mac. In today’s climate of non-stop worms, trojans and viruses, releasing a computer with no virus removal software is irresponsible on the part of Apple. The OS X comes with some system maintenance utilities, but essentials such as a defragmenter or a or registry cleaner are notably absent. I would expect a Mini to get really slow and unstable within a couple months if you can’t perform any routine maintenance tasks on it."

paper is done!
I don't know how it happened, but working on it from about 4 until 7, and then 9:30 to midnight... and 7 to 8:30am somehow did it. You wouldn't think so, but somehow I produced 8 pages of text and two of cited literature. I still hate maximum content levels... it drives me crazy when I hit the ceiling and then have to spend half an hour editing and reformatting to make it all fit.
and now, on to presentation... one class... that's it. You'd think it would give me less grief than this.
