Hit up Record Land for all your oldskool vinyl needs. They have it whether you want it or not. It will blow your mind just walking into that place. It's like if an entire floor of rutherford library contained vinyl instead of books and it was jammed into half the space. THAT'S Record Land. The prices aren't amazing, but they're not stupidly expensive either. It's the kinda place you go to when you can't find the shit you're looking for anywhere else. I got myself some Buddy Rich records when I was there.

Also, maybe Eric can help me out with the name of the place... but there's this one store that's a comic-shop on one side and a record-shop on the other side (like half-and-half) and it's TOTALLY sweet! If Eric doesn't know the name of it either, just ask some people in Calgary where the record/comic shop is that has a mural painted on the brickwall side of the store? When we were there, everything in the entire store was 30% off. It was soooo rad. I spent like $200 in that store alone. And as opposed to Recordland, they specialize in more contemporary stuff, all the indie shit, all the hipster shit, all the hip-hop shit; they got it.

Between those two stores you're set. Nonetheless, there are some other places you can hit up too, but those two should be your main concern.

yeah AD i see what you're getting at. the only thing i suggest you consider is that most introductory texts try to present as many X-Theories as possible as it is a good way to generate content- your prof is likely to suggest his because he is more familiar with it, and not necessarily to discredit other ones. however on the topic of social theories though i don't know much about Criminology, i do know that rarely in real life can a single social theories explain all phenomena, and furthermore most theories though they are in academic competition with one another are rarely in themselves necessarily conflicting/opposite/mutually exclusive of one another.

So, a little while ago, Al mentioned something about a possible day trip to Calgary over the Reading Week break. I'm wondering if anyone out there is still up for that, perhaps on the weekend.

(Are there any decent record shops there? An objective to the trip always helps.)

I was reading my criminology textbook today(as I have a midterm early next week) and I came across something that interested me. I'm going to use some jargon here that may not mean as much to some of you, but this is interesting none the less. As I was reading, I usually don't pay any attention to who wrote the cited works. I just want the content, but one of them caught my attention. This was because the name in question is the same as the dude who teaches my class. That's all fine and good, a teacher who knows what he's doing well enough to be cited in the textbook. That in itself isn't worth bringing to your attention. What is worth it though, is that I found his name in the instrumental Marxist section. That's a conflict theory that revolves around the idea that the state is the puppet of the capitalists. It only really serves to explain white colar crime and their apparent immunity from the law (labour laws, lawyer fees etc.) Their explanation for all the rest is rather weak as they claim the laws are just to control the masses. I don't put that much credit towards the theories as they oversimplify things way to much and only provide anything relevent to a section of crime for which there are better theories. So, having noticed this, the biase in my teacher is suddenly all to apparent. From his lectures you get a view of certain theories as being more relevant than others. From the text though, and from my own opinions, the biase is not well supported. Expecially as I'm a strain theory man myself. It's not a big deal really. He's a good teacher and he knows what he's talking about. I just can't look at him the same way anymore knowing his affiliation. please note, I know all teachers are biased, I just don't think you get an instrumental marxist every day.
