24-HOURS AGAINST TORTURE
Wednesday June 8th Edmonton
Leaflet walk from Canada Place (9700 Jasper Avenue) to Anne McLellan's Office (12304 - 107 Avenue)
Meet at 4:00 p.m. at Canada Place (so we get rush hour traffic)
Walk with banners to Anne McLellan's Office
If you can't make it for 4:00 p.m., join us on the route. We will walk down Jasper Avenue to 124 St. and North on 124 St. to 107 Avenue.
This action is part of a pan-Canadian day against torture called by the Toronto-based Campaign to Stop Secret Trials in Canada, in the context of the broader campaign to abolish discriminatory and unjust
"security certificates". Events are being planned across Canada, including in Montreal, Ottawa, Edmonton, Durham, Vancouver and Toronto.
Why a cross-Canada day against torture? In its (in)security certificate cases, Canada has quietly taken the position that it can
deport people even when there is a risk of torture. Five men currently face deportation despite the fact that human rights organisations and even Immigration Canada recognise they are at risk of torture. More generally, Canada already forces over 10,000 people to return to an uncertain fate every year - and post-September 11th anti-migrant policies such as the "Safe Third Country Agreement" mean that even fewer people will be protected. Nor, in the prevailing atmosphere of racist hysteria, are Canadian citizens safe: not only Maher Arar, but Mr. Ahmad Abou El Maati, Mr. Abdullah Almalki and Mr. Muayyed Nurredin are known to have been rendered to foreign countries where they were tortured. Canada has made no complaint about the use of torture by its allies in Iraq, Guantanamo Bay, Palestine, Afghanistan (where Canadian troops are stationed), Europe, and the US. On the contrary, Canada's spy agency CSIS exchanges information with foreign spy agencies who use torture and then makes use of this highly suspect information in "security" certificate cases and against other people in Canada. At the same time, Canada uses police tactics and prison conditions which have been described as amounting to physical and psychological torture: one of the security certificate detainees, for example, has been in solitary confinement for two and a half years.
From Abu Ghraib, to Guantanamo, to Canada, in the context of the so-
called "war on terror", western governments are in the process of normalising state use of the most extreme forms of physical and psychological abuse. Canada is deeply involved. High time to speak out!

Oppose Israel's participation in training exercises at CFB Cold Lake!
Planning meeting: Today, Sunday, June 5th. 2:00 pm, Next Act Pub. 8224 104th Street.
Details:
Canada has invited the Israeli air force to participate in major war games at Alberta's CFB Cold Lake weapons range, in an exercise taking place from May 15th to June 24th. Israel is sending 10 F-16 fighter jets and about 150 air crew to receive significant air combat training.
The same Israeli air force is responsible for the murder of Palestinian civillians in the occupied territories and the demolition of their homes. It has used missiles against civilians, ambulances and even refugees, as well as executing extra-judicial assassinations, in violation of international and humanitarian law.
It is abhorrent that Canada is providing assistance and training to a
force which has a history of vicious war crimes and total contempt for international law. It must not pass unopposed!

After watching Spiderman 2 on TV, I came across this from Superhero hype
A while back Ain't-It-Cool-News broke the story that Thomas Hayden Church will indeed be playing SANDMAN and that here's a ton of Sandman conceptual art all over the Spidey-offices.
Well today 'Anonymous' tells us the following: "Yes the Sandman will be in Spider-Man 3 but he's not the only villain. And no it isn't Black Cat like some people were suggesting. It will be SANDMAN AND HOBGOBLIN"
Take this with a grain of salt right now and stay tuned for more on the villain or villains.
