some interesting browser differences I've noticed tonight:

A. DHTML processing speed
IE: very fast
Firefox: terribly slow... makes animation difficult
WINNER: internet explorer blows firefox out of the water on this one

B. Use of DHTML with the gif89a format
IE: gif remains at frame 1 until dynamic action script completed whereupon animation of the gif begins
Firefox: animates the gif concurrently while performing the dynamc action
WINNER: while both methods could be useful in different situations, I give a slight edge to Firefox in its ability to perform parallel tasks.

C. Handling of cached files shared between 2 seperate html files
IE: when switching from one html page to another, the browser reloads files from the cache, which results in a quick on-screen flicker while image files reload.
Firefox: when switching from one html page to another, the browser uses the same already opened instance of the file. This is significant for animation as it means that any animated gif already opened will begin on the new page at the frame from which it left off on the previous page... thereby allowing for seamless and flickerless animation between pages.
WINNER: Firefox's ability for seamless transitions gives it potential as an interactive development environment.

OVERALL CHAMPION: Internet Explorer. Although it doesn't handle file objects as elegantly as it could, it at least allows DHTML scripts to run at an adequately useful framerate. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Firefox. Should Firefox be optimized to run DHTML faster, it will take the prize, but for now it just didn't stand up to the task.

EDIT: hey... that's weird; Internet Explorer is suddenly animating gifs WHILE performing DHTML tasks. So I guess it doesn't actually lose trial B anyway (it should then technically result in a tie). But I coulda SWORE it wasn't doing that before!

yeah man, I've also got a good 3 or 4 hours ahead of me tonight.

I've perfected the process of "dynamic parallax framing"... but it seems that finishing off one task only results in the spawning of new ones. Maybe in a few days I'll have something to show you guys. Don't hold your breath though... I've been prolifically lazy this last week and a half.
