pricksteer music nerd Nick Sylvester (from Pitchfork fame) and his encounter with DFA1979 - from his Village Voice Blog, RIFF RAFF
"An Impromptu Interview with Death From Above 1979
I know it's not obvious from the posts, but Riff Raff can get a bit OCD. Like this morning, when the riff wagon went cruising for hotel breakfast. I was anxious to sit in the same seat I've had for two days in a row now, only to find this morning, that in the seat was the drummer from Death From Above 1979, sucking down some yogurt.
Well isn't this just great. I don't like having to be put on the spot, but if this guy's going to make me interview him, I'll just put up with it.
Are you a dude in a band.
...
It's OK, you can smile.
What band?
Death From Above
...
1979?
I'm in that band, yes.
This wasn't going anywhere--DFA79 guy wasn't going to give me his seat unless I asked him explicitly. So I got up the gall and did. Here goes:
I love you guys.
Thanks.
It's OK, I'll sit somewhere else.

Pam: yeah, I know, the weather sucks everywhere, but Hinton's been getting it cooler and longer than E-town. I really don't mind, the bugs stay down, and it's definitely not too cool/hot to work... I just wish I could have time off in the sun this summer... but it doesn't seem likely... that's why I was whining. And really, I know the whole province has been having bizarre weather, so whatever, maybe it was a whine for all of Alberta, not just hinton... meh.
Thanks y'all for the helpful wedding gift suggestions. I'm thinking I might just go with a bottle of wine and money... but we'll see. There aren't many shopping options here beyond Wal-Mart, and I don't feel like buying them crap.
Pam again! how is Cassie? That's really shitty. I hope she's not too badly burned.
uh, Jesse, congratulations on the light sabre, I think.
oh, and I'm in love with Amos Lee. His voice is so amazingly beautiful, I could float away on it.

Oh hey, I just found my new band on the net:
RED MEDICINE on newmusiccanada.ca
You should listen to those tracks. The thing that will probably blow your mind is that none of that was ever practiced, and these recordings were all done live in one take. It's purely improvisational. Not only that, but the entire band is nothing more than 2 guitars and the drums, yet it sounds like so much more. Oh, I should point out that there's a lot of experimental noise stuff going on in those tracks... but be patient if that's not your cup of tea because there's a lot of really good spacey punk rock stuff in there if you wait it out.
edit: I don't know what happened on the second track on that site, but the rock stuff got cut out and so now it's just a noise track. Still kinda cool though... especially the beginning where it sounds like you're an astronaut on a friggin rocket-shuttle blasting off into space or something.

I dunno man... if I wasn't buying the deck myself I'd have hooked you up... but I think I'm probably gonna want it myself, the greedy bastard that I am. haha
Well, at least this way I'll buy it regardless and if I decide I don't want it I know I can get rid of it. It really is a sweet deal.

Tay, If you don't want the deck and trucks, I know someone who has yet to buy one that said he would and hasn't, but is still going to. and I think you know who I am talking about. that is, only if you arn't gonna pick em up. and guess who is the proud owner of their very own replica light saber? any guesses? nobody? ok then

I was at the lake yesterday and my old dog fell in the fire, and she didn't even jump out. What did she do, she sat down. I think my dog is losing her mind. Poor Puppy.

Man, I'm totally getting hooked up with a bunch of sweet deals lately. First I got the R2D2 cooler, then this weekend I got this sweet red 60's-diner booth-style bench-seat to go in the new house. Plus, this guy at work might be selling me a pair of tower stereo speakers (250 watts each!) for a cool hundred, and now tomorrow I'm probably buying a custom-made skate deck complete with brand-new trucks, hardware and wheels for $80!!! The trucks themselves have never been used and are probably worth $80 alone...
On one hand, these deals are too sweet to pass up. On the other hand, I'm spending a shitload of money. ARGH.
