A bill in the States to combat spyware has passed the committee stages and is now on its way to legislative chambers. Originally it was proposed as the "Safeguard Against Privacy Invasions Act." Unfortunately, committees decided that SAPIA was not as clever an acronym as their previous foray into the world of internet privacy invasion, the "Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act of 2003", or CAN-SPAM Act. After many months of deliberation, they finally came up with a suitable name, the "Securely Protect Yourself Against Cyber Trespass Act" (SPY ACT Act). I'm glad they haven't got their heads up their arses down there, or else I might have to be worried about the States.
