Roads Gone Wild. Turning road design on its ear. The general message seems to, rather than separating forms of traffic, installing traffic signs, and collecting traffic into major thoroughfares, planners would do better to integrate traffic (bring pedestrians and vehicles closer together), rely on driver interaction, and distribute traffic.

Counterintuitive at first, but it kind of makes sense when you think about it. Drivers close to pedestrians are more mindful of that fact, and less likely to drive aggressively. (The amazing example in the article is when the engineer approaches an intersection, "tucks his hands behind his back and begins to walk into the square - backward - straight into traffic, without being able to see oncoming vehicles. A stream of motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians ease around him, instinctively yielding to a man with the courage of his convictions.") Driver interaction, rather than relying on the assumption that drivers obey signs, increases awareness. And thinking about traffic as people going places rather than moving electricity from one place to another may just reduce travel time. It's an interesting piece, and worth considering, I think.

James Murphy, the megalomaniacal genius behind New York production team/record company DFA, has been teasing us hip, glow-stick-swingin' dancepunks for months with infectious strains of booty-shakin' 12-inch singles. First, there was the anthemic "Losing My Edge" and the satirical brilliance of "Beat Connection", and around this time last year came the, uh, satirical brilliance of "Yeah". And just as we were beginning to foam at the mouth (maybe we should get a shot for that...) for more material, here comes the new action: The release of Murphy's full-length, all-new material debut as LCD Soundsystem.
Pitchfork spoke to DFA spokesman Jonathan Galkin yesterday via that wonder of modern engineering, the telephone, and he gave us the lowdown on the release. Galkin said that about 95% of the album is exclusively Murphy; he plays guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and handled vocal tracking as well. Recorded at DFA Studios in New York City and Long View Farm Recording Studios in Massachusetts, the self-titled album has been tagged with a release date of February, 15, 2005. It's a Tuesday. Write it down. Stateside, the album will be released by Capitol Records.

Meanwhile, in the UK-- where those lucky Brits can get their hands on the LP on January 24-- the album has already spawned a single, "Movement". But if you're not into the whole "paying out the nose for import singles" thing, you'll be happy to learn that the B-side of that release, "Yr City's a Sucker", will receive an exclusive stateside release January 11th. The A-side will feature a vocal version of the song, with an instrumental on the B-side. According to Galkin, "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House" is expected to be released as the album's next single, and shooting for the track's video has already commenced. The B-side for that one will feature a remix of the title track by Belgian duo Soulwax. Galkin sums up their version as "a pretty straightforward party anthem," reminiscent of "The B-52s and Jon Spencer."

Galkin also talked a bit about the sound of the album. "It definitely incorporates everything that's influenced [Murphy]...it keeps with styles merging or styles influencing each other, where suddenly you didn't think Carl Craig and T. Rex could live in one track, and somehow they do. It sounds like James finally getting to everything that he always felt was special about tracks, like he got to spill his guts onto one record. It's very in keeping with what LCD has done in the past...It's James setting out to make a proper LP, a side A and a side B."

As previously reported, the release showcases nine tracks, none of which have yet been officially released ("Never as Tired as When I'm Waking Up" is not to be confused with "Tired", the B-side of LCD's "Give It Up" single). Tracklist:

Actually, Mary, I think that was Alison's point. Just as there would be no Christians under such circumstances, similarly there would be no environmentalists if their arguments could be dismissed by "well, you're living on farmland, so saying acquiring farmland is bad is hypocritical, therefore you aren't a true environmentalist, and you should fix your own habits before you criticize mine." (There's a similar, facetious argument used against vegetarianism that always irks me.)


Were you among those who didn't vote in the senator-in-waiting election? Well, you'll love this. The Premier is meeting with the winners of that election to discuss their current role. Options include paying them (don't we pay enough senators to do no work, Andrew Thompson?) and sending them to Ottawa to to act as vocal critics of the present Senate system. Apparently, the nearly 30% of voters who came out to vote and refused to vote for senators be damned; we're going to pay them to lobby for a political platform issue!

It's bullshit like this that almost makes me forget that Ezra Levant (a.k.a. The Northern Ann Coulter) argued that disregarding missile defence because it involves weaponization of space is foolish because "space is already weaponized; ICBMs fly through space!"

Who the hell is this Grand Arms Kampfer person? Sound like a good idea for Grand Arms though. I'll make a whole line of them like Kamen rider or Ultraman, they'll all have special powers and abilities and instead of just Panzer there'll be a whole bunch of them. There could even be a Grand Arms Chrono who could control time even facilitate time travel... Whoa! Reverse De ja Vu... Is that called a vision?

Since I'll be going back to the future soon I'll leave you guys with some advice. Study hard for your finals or you'll all fail! Those not writing final, don't drink too much or you'll get something called beer belly. To the guys you'll all go bald so get use to it. Alison, I wasn't trying to say that because you happen to live within a situation you have no right to comment on it, and I'm sorry if I came across that way. I think that maybe the problem with posting things of this nature online is that it's difficult to start a dialouge of any kind or ask any questions without what you are saying seeming like an attack. That isn't how I intended it. I'm sure if we'd been having the conversation in person, we could have resolved it nicely in the space of about 5 seconds.

As for the rest...and I know this wasn't what you were saying in your post...I'm just going to take a couple of lines to clear up some misconceptions. Christians are supposed to try and live their lives in a way that honours God, but they screw up. Christians don't believe that only non-Christians are sinners, they believe that EVERYBODY, Christian, or non-Christian is a sinner. And human. And fallible. That's why Christians still do everything everyone else does - they're still human. So to say that only non-sinner can be Christian is incorrect, if so, there would be no Christians at all.
