shit man, that's brutal. I've been e-mailing myself non-stop between here and the university on these essays of mine... and I kept thinking to myself "shit taylor, you're gonna send the wrong one"... but somehow I managed not to. *phewf!* But yeah man... that's quite possibly one of the shittiest things that can happen. I feel your pain.

I haven't slept for so long now that my vision is literally spinning around. I think I'm gonna go to sleep though... but then again I've come so far I almost feel like seeing if I can do it another day, y'know just to prove how hardcore I am.

But yeah, naw... I'm goin to bed. It's been at LEAST 40 hours since I last slept. This is gonna be good times. nite nite.

Time to cause some trouble while past Al is busy... Tell him he'll work on his fire protection system for most of next term, tell him that it will work like a charm. In actuality when he presents it to the other engineering students in April it'll blow up and burn down Etlc! He'll then say: "Back to the drawing board." And this will get him off the hook for causing the explosion. Tee Hee!

yes that paper i wrote on little mountain area i thought was pretty good..... it was a good paper that had the potential to be great but time constraints made that impossible.... i started my research a few days before it was due so i was unable to secure interviews from people i would have been interested in talking, such as the citys conservation coordinator.... little mountains impact on a rethinking of civic conservation policy is really a topic that has not been studied in depth before so it would have been interesting to uncover more facts so i could make concrete arguments..... as it stands most of the conclusions in my paper were based on conjecture.... also alison the point of that politician thing was just that u should not be afraid to have a strong opinion on a subject one way or another.... its vital to see both sides of an argument but at the same time to present both sides and not take a position urself betrays a lack of strength in ur convictions.... i just dont like wishy washy arguments if ure well informed on a topic then u should be qualified enough to take a definite stand....

interesting thing on the missile defense front: (I heard it on CBC)

Regardless of whether or not Canada joins the US on this program, they will still be shooting missiles down over our territory. So hey, that's just awesome. The idea that possibly - if it ever works - nuclear warhead missiles will be shot down over Canadian land wily-nily by the United States kinda scares me. I mean, think about it. It's the ultimate example of self-preservation: they're going to prevent the missile from hitting home, so who cares where it does hit instead. yay! Nuclear radiation here we come! Do you think it would be different if we got ourselves involved though? The states will still have their guns pointing up in the sky, with the primary intent of protecting themselves... and will Canada have enough to cover all of Canada? So we're likely to still have missiles being shot down over us... woo hoo!

Can't there be some sort of recourse for this? I mean, really, if, say Romania were to start doing this: shielding their country from the threat of incoming missiles by shooting them down over other countries, wouldn't the other countries have grounds to do something? It's not like the Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria et al would necessarily be targetting Romania, but they would be hit with the falling missiles... something about sovereignty and airspace maybe...

It's starting to worry me. And heck, even if there is something, some law or somewhat else, it doesn't mean the states is going to comply... just check out all the other things they haven't complied with... fucking Star Wars

hmm... I had something else to say...

oh, right, Paras, that whole principle of combining modes of transit into closer confines is one of the major principles behind smart growth and traffic calming. It makes people both more receptive and attentive, and also makes them slow down... which is good all around for safety issues. If they even changed half the roads in our new subdivisions into those sorts of narrower wonders, things would be much safer for children to play on, and we would have many fewer of those crazy speeding drivers hitting pedestrians as they turn corners. As a corollary to that, did you know that children are more likely to be hit by a car than kidnapped by a stranger while they walk to school or play outside. Take that over-concerned mothers, it's your car that's a bigger threat than the "stranger danger" we teach them about from the time they're three.

The only problem is that Edmonton needs those wide streets to shovel snow onto in the winter time.

Sorry, Mary. Guess I was reading a little quickly...

Roads Gone Wild. Turning road design on its ear. The general message seems to, rather than separating forms of traffic, installing traffic signs, and collecting traffic into major thoroughfares, planners would do better to integrate traffic (bring pedestrians and vehicles closer together), rely on driver interaction, and distribute traffic.

Counterintuitive at first, but it kind of makes sense when you think about it. Drivers close to pedestrians are more mindful of that fact, and less likely to drive aggressively. (The amazing example in the article is when the engineer approaches an intersection, "tucks his hands behind his back and begins to walk into the square - backward - straight into traffic, without being able to see oncoming vehicles. A stream of motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians ease around him, instinctively yielding to a man with the courage of his convictions.") Driver interaction, rather than relying on the assumption that drivers obey signs, increases awareness. And thinking about traffic as people going places rather than moving electricity from one place to another may just reduce travel time. It's an interesting piece, and worth considering, I think.
