The following are from the Listen records mailinglist:
*Daedelus - Exquisite Corpse - Ninja Tune - LP/CD
- Exquisite Corpse is an ode to and a lament for hip hop culture. Featuring solo contributions and collaborative efforts with guests whose performances range from traditional (MF Doom, Sci from Scienz of Life) to poetic (Mike Ladd, CYNE, Laura Darling) to experimental (Prefuse 73, Hrishikesh Hirway of The One AM Radio, TTC, Jogger), Exquisite Corpse's form combines disparate elements into Daedelus's single-minded vision. The album title's triple meaning-- a reference to death, a grand body of work, and the Surrealist group drawing game-- directly reflects the music's sum of the best elements of Daedelus's past productions. Guest emcees and vocalists contrast their own styles with Daedelus's sugar-laden undercoating, proving that there are no limits to what can be included on a hip hop album. With releases on Plug Research, Hefty, Tigerbeat 6, and Eastern Development, Daedelus's refined style has no imitators. Contrasting IDM styled cut-ups with childlike arrangements from the '30s and '40s, his sound is entirely new. His productions find the hidden common denominator between modern electronics and sampled music from days gone by. Recording out of Santa Monica, Daedelus now incorporates hip hop into his mix, with guest spots from Busdriver (Afterlife), Sach (Nonce), Absract Rude (Project Blowed), Madlib (Stones Throw), and High Priest (Anti-Pop Consortium), all leading to his work on the 2003 Mush full length The Weather.
Kid Koala - Live From The Short Attention Span Theater Tour - Ninja Tune - CD+DVD
- Five tracks captured live in London during Kid Koala’s ambitious Some Of My Best Friends Are DJs tour. Anchored by the concept of a turntable band, Koala, along with DJ Jester and P-Love rocked the house with eight turntables, two Wurlitzers, some effects, some mics, and a ton of records. There was comedy, animations, performance, audience participation, and an intermission for Bingo. Includes a bonus DVD with twenty-five minutes of music shot at the same performance, as well as the videos from “Basin Street Blues” and “Fender Bender,” the Monkmus-created animated sequences from the show, and a lovely Bingo Image Generator so you can relive the night over and over until you actually win a game.
*V/A - TV Breaks & Sound Effects Vol.1 - Yosumi - 2LP
- Finally, a breaks record for me. From the creators of Video Game Breaks, Cartoon Breaks and Hip Hop Essentials: Movie FX. Nearly 80 minutes long.
