On the flip side, I have got to stop reading the Awful Links of the Day. They just lead me to more nonsense like this:

I don't know why I expect more, but people should know better. they just should. though, you are right, the whole sense of detachment makes it easier to get away with certain things, despite all our interconnectedness. anyway whatever. it was still something I found a little too far to just be tongue in cheek.

Wisdom from the internet personality test:

  • "Parking you Cadillac illegally"

  • "To be richer than you allready are"

  • "Bolt because you couln`t pay the bill in a million years"

  • "A huge mancion"

  • "Allways be rich"

There is much worse stuff out there (for example, people writing who genuinely believe some of their stereotypes.) A great source for stuff like this is SomethingAwful, a very tongue-in-cheek look at the internet's low points. (Of particular relevence here is the Awful Link of the Day, and, one of my favourites, the Weekend Web. I believe this week's WW looks at the glory that is Cosplay (If you're really curious, the link explains all.))

What can I say, except that people are dumb, and people with technology and no connection to their audience are even dumber. The best description of the effect of this detachment is Godwin's Law; that the longer a usenet (or, in more contemporary internet terms, webboard) discussion continues, the more likely it becomes that someone likens someone else to Hitler and/or Nazis.

Of course, despite my regular dose of the dregs of the internet, I still get surprised once in a while. Case in point: happy slappers.

so... I took http://www.youthink.com/quiz.asp?action=take&quiz_id=915 this test: Who are You in America? and the answer I got was Hindu (justification: 'we don't know why this is in here, how did you get it?'), and then I moved some of my choices around and got Illegal Mexican Immigrant (justification: the americans hate you because they think you take jobs away from them, though they won't do the work anyway... God bless you, because no one else will) holy crap, ouch.

I mean, first off, 'no reason' why Hindu is in there, and 'no one else will' man that fucking bites. what a nasty test. but I think you all should take it, and mess with the questions. What did I choose? for both, I chose that people will likely think I'm a terrorist and that I'll spend the rest of my life convincing people I'm not a terrorist... if I were to go to the states ... and tada! Hindu and Mexican. what a nasty thing to say about people... though it was likely written by a highschool student who was bored... sadly still playing up stereotypes even with the caveat that they and their friends fall into a lot of the categories therein. what do you want to bet it's the white rich guy and southern redneck categories and not the other ones? or am I being too critical of a simple stupid internet quiz... likely yes. but interesting nonetheless and on the offchance that you're bored out of your tree, I suggest taking it. just to see... if I'm a Hindu and Mexican, what are you?
