Some things that came up in discussions I've had with people over the past few days:

  • Bourque.org, Canada's tabloidy-headline answer to the Drudge Report (I wonder if the Bourque guy has that stupid hat, too.)
  • Arimaa. Derived from chess and specifically designed to be easy for humans and hard for computers (basically a gauntlet to the AI programmers of the world.) There are tutorials.

  • On a side note, while it's good to challenge AI programmers to come up with better ways of solving problems, I'm not sure Arimaa is the way to go. It seems like you're just refining and improving the search algorithms used for standard two-player zero-sum games (like Chess and Checkers) without expanding what AI can do, like poker and other games that better simulate real-life requirements.

But Percy, any money that goes to building infrastructure will take away from my Scrooge McPool. We cannot allow that, under any circumstances.

In all seriousness, that Ontario article seems pretty sketchy, based on my limited understanding of federal transfer payments. If I understand correctly, transfers are supposed to help balance things out between 'have' and 'have-not' provinces. So, logically, how could transfers create a have-not province? At best, wouldn't it turn a 'have' province into a 'break-even' province? Am I missing something? Percy?

Even stranger to me is the concept of provinces which contribute more than they get back from the feds asking for the difference back. Why not just throw out the whole system of transfers, then?

I don't see what's so great about the "swelling coffers" of Alberta. It's just more money unused in a province that has roads in worse condition than Moncton's. If people have something to say I doubt a 25 year old ruckus over the NEP will keep anyone quiet about perceived unfairness.

    Interesting headlines 2 days later...

Ontario fears 'have-not' status: In-the-red province eyes booming Alberta

Its almost like we're worried that cousin Ontario is gonna come over and maybe pee in the money pool. Personally I'd be more worried about Calgary kicking the rest of the Alberta family out of the pool and saying its all theirs.
