i like this in response, though:

"We just got over a seven-game series in the Stanley Cup finals and there seems to be a lot of discussion about this and I'm not sure where it's coming from," added Lowe. "Let's put it this way. Why would we want to trade Chris Pronger?"

but, maybe there is some sort of family issue going on here... if the rumour's at all true. if that's the case, who can begrudge a guy who wants to make sure his family feels comfortable and happy? (and/or he's got some serious problems with one of his fellow teammates...) even if the oilers do need him...

Gwa?:

The Edmonton Oilers are in the midst of what could be a severe shakeup to their roster just days after their Game 7 Stanley Cup Final loss.

NHL sources indicate that Oilers' defenceman Chris Pronger has requested a trade from the club based on "personal, family considerations."
At least it makes more sense than this idiocy I read yesterday:
Don't be surprised if the Oilers trade Chris Pronger to free up some money. He has a whopping salary and the return could be significant.
But I'm not sure what family issues could come up that override his long term contract. It may just blow over. There's talk of a Pronger-Luongo deal, but that seems rather foolish to me. With Pronger, the Oilers have a defence that makes mediocre goalies passable. My layman's view suggests, contrary to the conventional wisdom about goalies, that he's worth more than an all-star goalie. Still, I could be wrong...

Futurama is back:

Last fall, Comedy Central outbid Adult Swim for the license to air all 52 episodes of "Futurama" and whatever new episodes might one day be produced.

This week, deals were inked to secure all of the original voice talent and the production staff of "Futurama," paving the way for the series' return to TV.
...

Fox may also have the option to air the new episodes, although it is highly unlikely to do so, according to industry sources.

Excellent. Even better that Fox isn't going to benefit from its return.

oh, oh! best sign at the rally: "I like cheese... (flip over sign) ... but I LOVE the Edmonton Oilers" well, that's the wittiest/hipster one. The rest were further from the heart. "you'll always be number one in our hearts" "you won the cup in our minds" stuff like that, it was really sweet and heart-warming. a bit of a tear jerker when Kevin Lowe told us the Oilers had failed, but all in all a reaffirmation of Edmonton's love for the Oilers and the Oilers' love of Edmonton.

hockey is the new religion... it would seem.

so, um... any of you listen to cbc radio today at, oh, say 12:30? 'cause i was on it!

that's right, i went to the Oilers' rally downtown, and got interviewed on the team's 'failure' (ha, right, 'cause getting within a hair's breadth of the ultimate dream is definitely a failure...) and my fandom (seeing as i was sporting an ancient jersey). kinda cool. i tried to stay intelligent and coherent... but it's difficult in a rapid-fire live interview. i have a new respect for radio/television folks. i gots me a cbc frisbee and some hockey night in canada stickers out of the deal too. and a greater respect for the hockey players that make up the Edmonton Oilers.

i think i need to write them a letter now though.

Hey, Percy, I know this is an issue that I've discussed with you in the past: PM unveils redress for head tax on Chinese:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has promised "symbolic payments" to Chinese immigrants who paid a head tax to Canada between 1885 and 1923.

Widows of men who paid the head tax are also covered, Harper told the House of Commons on Thursday.

He also offered a formal apology for the fact that the tax was imposed, saying "the government of Canada recognizes the stigma and exclusion" the tax represented.

Thoughts?

Plus 11 times! Shouldn't Air Marshalls be better trained to take down a guy with few shots as possible? Actually the issued bullets they give air marshalls don't have much stopping power. Too much stopping power and the bullet will pass thru a person possibly causing collateral damage. Strange world we live in.

Even after reading the same ones for many years. So yah Par there are scarier things out there. You can control people but you can't control the Old Ones.
