Some of you folks that pay closer attention to american politics should eat this up...

Klein slams Gore over 'truly nuts' oilsands

I really thought that Ralph was off his form when he dismissed Gore's comments by saying Al was "...about as far left as you can go." But I guess in the US calling someone "left-wing" or "right-wing" is intelligent political rebuttal.

I dunno, maybe Ralph redeemed himself with - "...I don't know what he (Gore) proposes the world run on. Maybe hot air.", but imagine if he was still drinking!

On a side note yesterday was our most winningest game of Ultimate yet. 15-8 for us! Now we know who is holding us back... Apparently everyone except: George, Serena, Scott and Kira. Yep they pretty much rolled over the other team, and we were playing shorthanded for the whole game!

You could always cheer for Portugal, or is that game already over? It does suck that Germany lost, I was rooting for them as well.

A curse on your beloved Azzuri, Tony. Now who do I cheer for? Cheese-eating surrender monkeys??

Oilers fans depressed about prospects for next year? (Consciously, I'm not so much; I'm pretty sure Lowe can swing something decent). Some advice from The Hockey News:

Pity the Edmonton Oilers. Even in the revamped climate of the new NHL symphony they’re still stuck playing second fiddle to the bigger markets of North America. Being within one measly win of another Stanley Cup still isn’t proof enough for the elite players in the league to want to play their hockey in Edmonton? Perhaps an overhaul of the city is in order. What will take to convince the hockey world that the city is big time and should be treated as such?

First off, boost that sparse population base. On your best day you still can’t crack a million residents. Find a way to attract more immigrants. Not a couple, a whole mess of them. Make up a rumor about another gold rush. Offer free methadone at clinics. Tell people you’ve built a tunnel from Mexico to Los Angeles via St. Albert. Do anything to add that seventh digit to your road signs.

It only gets better.

right... Conklin... sure

unfortunately, that's not the first time i've heard that joke, Eric.
thankfully i didn't have the opportunity to scold the one on television while being in the other... if you know what i mean. and if you don't, don't twist those words into anything vaguely raunchy.

random question for the floor: anyone know what the average U of A entrance scholarship was for? was it $1000? I've forgotten and my records don't cover it, unfortunately. (and supposedly I need to know in order to apply for scholarships now)

... oo! just figured it out. never mind. it was $1000

and... if you're at all curious, this is what I'm supposedly doing for the next couple of years:
The research I am conducting in Forest Ecology and Management focuses on mixedwood management, as it pertains to aspen regeneration, in response to strip and uniform shelterwood harvest systems. While studies have examined aspen response and recovery to various styles of harvest regime, little has been done on an operational scale encompassing different areas of Alberta's boreal forest. The study area of my project encompasses mixedwoods in Conklin, Wandering River, High Level and Grande Prairie, Alberta. Aspen recovery will be investigated through different means, via the direct effects of the various harvest methods utilized, the effects of residual aspen and spruce and the effects of machine traffic and corresponding soil compaction. The ultimate goal of this research is to determine whether these harvest methods will be successful in producing mixedwood second growth, or if they will simply allow for spruce understory release and minimal aspen regrowth.

hooray for scholarship applications!

well, we've got Reasoner back, for two years. Still, doesn't fix our blueline problem... and we'd better damn well sign Horcoff soon. ... but our offence is looking pretty good... if you ask me
