- Alison, i'd have to disagree with you on the inappropriateness of using the word douchebag. for one the word (as most words) have a multiplicity of meanings. the following are the two most popular definitions of douchebag on urbandictionary.com:
1. An object used for vaginal hygeine.
2. A stuck-up asshole.
1. Damn, she could use a douchebag...
2. Fuck you, douchebag!
------------------------------------------
An insult similar in nature to 'asshole' or 'fuckface.' Usually preceded with "fuckin" - not to be confused with "fucking."
That boy isn't from the ghetto. What a fuckin' douchebag.
so indeed firstly, Paras employed the correct usage of the word, which is more than can be said for most fuckfaces who use it.
secondly, though i completely agree with you that it is a negative word that draws its symbolic meaning from vaginal hygeine i do not agree that it necesarily submits to misogynistic hate. the word itself is much like most curse words in that it is referential to sex and the body. the negative connotation associated with these words, as most neo-Freudians would point out, is due to our incessant and cosmic fear of death, the fragile body being the constant reminder to our minds of this. One is reminded of that Jonnathan Swift poem, "O Celia, she shits, she shits". a similar association can be drawn from expletives such as prick, asshole, shithead - i do not necessarily think it would be fair to say that a word like prick engenders hate towards men necessarily.
lastly the word douchebag is uniquely descriptive, just as the word flower or sunset. it signifies a particular expressive meaning, and thus functions as any word should. since it serves the purpose that words serve i think that any reluctance to use such words is a form of self censorship and limitation of symbolically expressing our world.
and that's where i primarily disagree with you Alison: you disagree with there being such a meaning in the first place, but instead of questioning this central root instead attempt to limit its effects through demarcating and constricting specific words and practices. though i cannot answer to the employment of such a word and its connotations, i more clearly recognize the dangers of self restriction on language, and i think resolutions which rely on these limiting practices should be deeply questioned.

- No, and no.
Besides, according to the almighty word god, a douchbag can also be used for enemas.
And no matter how mad with power you've become, alison, even you can't invent pop culture phrases.
Oh, and Bork.

- no I spelled "the" wrong. it was just too late to change things when I finally noticed.
and come on, douchebag? can't you find a less female-derogatory term to call people?
it is a pretty lame phrase anyway, but it's still derogatory all the same.
how about enema-pump? it's still a pretty nasty insult and non-sex-biased.
we just need to make it catch on now.

- Validating your existence and reason for posting.
Greatly confused...
Why can't life be more simpler... why can't randomly destroying things provide answers?

- and now a quotation from your friendly neighbourhood Conservative Party Leader:
"Human rights commissions, as they are evolving, are an attack on fundamental freedom and teh basic existence of a democratic society. It is in fact totalitarianism. I find this very scary stuff." Stephen Harper, BC Report 11, Jan 1999
hmm... "human rights... very scary stuff" so maybe he's not exactly saying that, but it sure seems close some days. I loved the Sunday Reader cartoon yesterday... Paul Martin pinning a note to Stephen Harper's back: "Ask me about Abortion" tee hee
