Yes, as Pete so lovingly put it, thank you Alison for giving my funny bone so much fodder. From now until we tire of it completely, the new insults will be "tampon" or "condom".

For example; AD, you are such a bloody condom!!

I didn't want to sound like a nihilist but this was in reference to video games. Like in Link when you need to open doors you just destroy everything in a room. Or like in crazy shooter games were you destroy everything on the screen and the game then gives you answers. Yep just geting answers from life by kicking as much butt as possible.

well fine then. It was just my opinion, and it appears that I have been overruled. no worries. I'll just continue to get my ire up over it. It's like cunt... and yes, I understand where you're coming from here, Eric. Sure, pop culture has taken this feminine hygeine product and turned it into an insult... but come on, we don't see people calling eachother tampons or condoms, now do we? And considering your Freudian analogies, why don't we come up with more mundane expletives then... seeing as it would be possible (through this frame of mind) to derogate any old word you wanted that was associated with humanness. you dustpan! : p (honestly not meant as an insult, merely an example)

And as for self-censorship, perhaps it was my choice to not say that word, but admittedly I was ignorant of this alternative definition, so you can't fault me for denying its existence when i didn't know about it at all. huzzah. But anyway, a person can choose to be aware of a multitude of words without using them and it doesn't necessarily mean they're censoring themselves. Self-expression can be changed depending on the words one chooses. I am not silencing myself by choosing not to use "douchebag" I am merely choosing a different way of expressing my thoughts. ... Most likely with "bastard," "asshole" or something along those lines.

Alison, i'd have to disagree with you on the inappropriateness of using the word douchebag. for one the word (as most words) have a multiplicity of meanings. the following are the two most popular definitions of douchebag on urbandictionary.com:

    1. An object used for vaginal hygeine.
    2. A stuck-up asshole.

    1. Damn, she could use a douchebag...
    2. Fuck you, douchebag!
    ------------------------------------------
An insult similar in nature to 'asshole' or 'fuckface.' Usually preceded with "fuckin" - not to be confused with "fucking."

That boy isn't from the ghetto. What a fuckin' douchebag.

so indeed firstly, Paras employed the correct usage of the word, which is more than can be said for most fuckfaces who use it.
secondly, though i completely agree with you that it is a negative word that draws its symbolic meaning from vaginal hygeine i do not agree that it necesarily submits to misogynistic hate. the word itself is much like most curse words in that it is referential to sex and the body. the negative connotation associated with these words, as most neo-Freudians would point out, is due to our incessant and cosmic fear of death, the fragile body being the constant reminder to our minds of this. One is reminded of that Jonnathan Swift poem, "O Celia, she shits, she shits". a similar association can be drawn from expletives such as prick, asshole, shithead - i do not necessarily think it would be fair to say that a word like prick engenders hate towards men necessarily.

lastly the word douchebag is uniquely descriptive, just as the word flower or sunset. it signifies a particular expressive meaning, and thus functions as any word should. since it serves the purpose that words serve i think that any reluctance to use such words is a form of self censorship and limitation of symbolically expressing our world.

and that's where i primarily disagree with you Alison: you disagree with there being such a meaning in the first place, but instead of questioning this central root instead attempt to limit its effects through demarcating and constricting specific words and practices. though i cannot answer to the employment of such a word and its connotations, i more clearly recognize the dangers of self restriction on language, and i think resolutions which rely on these limiting practices should be deeply questioned.

    No, and no.

Besides, according to the almighty word god, a douchbag can also be used for enemas.

And no matter how mad with power you've become, alison, even you can't invent pop culture phrases.

    Oh, and Bork.

no I spelled "the" wrong. it was just too late to change things when I finally noticed.

and come on, douchebag? can't you find a less female-derogatory term to call people?
it is a pretty lame phrase anyway, but it's still derogatory all the same.
how about enema-pump? it's still a pretty nasty insult and non-sex-biased.
we just need to make it catch on now.
